Project description

MVRDV's 23-storey skyscraper in Mission Rock, San Francisco is part of a masterplan by the San Francisco Giants and Tishman Speyer to create a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood inspired by Californian rock formations.

MVRDV, Mission Rock

MVRDV, along with internationally recognized firms Studio Gang, Henning Larsen, and WORKac has revealed its design for Building A, a 23-story mixed-use skyscraper in Mission Rock, San Francisco. The project is part of a masterplan developed by the San Francisco Giants baseball team and Tishman Speyer. This 12-year community-oriented plan aims to revitalize 28 acres of land, which is currently being used as a windswept parking lot, into a lively mixed-use waterfront neighborhood that would be a gathering point for locals and visitors.

Mission Rock is a public-private partnership aiming to create an ensemble of mixed-use buildings tied together by public spaces and ground-floor amenities. Giants and Tishman Speyer will work as co-master developers, general partners, designers, and leaseholders. Phase 1 of this project comprises of 2 residential and 2 commercial buildings, China Basin Park, and a retail and restaurant space. Construction of Phase 1 would begin in early 2020.

MVRDV drew inspiration from Californian rock formations while designing Building A. The structure features a narrow valley running between steep rocky walls that extend all the way up the skyscraper's western façade. This The Canyon is expected to become a lively and lush space with landscape designs from China Basin Park to Building A.

LOCATION

Building A is situated in a prime location and will be the home base for Mission Rock. The structure welcomes visitors at the "handshake" plaza, which connects to the 3rd Street Bridge to China Basin Park and the Building A corner. The design creates a visual dialogue between the waterfront, the iconic ballpark, and the building. The stepping and faceted volume visually connects with the ballpark's stands, simultaneously creating private and common terraces with extraordinary views towards the bay and downtown.

ABOUT PROJECT

The skyscraper comprises of 23 storeys with a partial basement that would hold on-site bike parking and space for the District Energy System. The North-East podium block acts as its separate building, connected to Building A's broader offerings. The port, referred to as the Annex, has its own lobby and program, opening to the building's east side. The residential amenity spaces would provide an opportunity for the residents to engage with the China Basin Park below and enjoy unobstructed views of the water and baybridge.

The height of the structure is 240 feet, with an additional 14-foot crown to screen mechanical equipment on the roof. The rooftop designs are vegetated and ecological habitats are created to communicate with the park below, creating an enhanced user experience. Details of all four buildings, including Building A's, are available on the press room.
